Drawn to the bright colors, whimsical designs, and positive messaging, we simply can't get enough of Haley Kennedy's artwork. Inspired by the beauty of nature and the indomitable feminine spirit, Haley is pursuing her passion and making a difference in the process.

Q: How did you get your start in art?

HK: From a very young age, I always had an interest in anything “creative”. I started creating drawings of family members and plants around the age of four and never looked back. I remember my dad drawing with me, he always encouraged me to create. I utilized my creativity all throughout grade school and am now in my 2nd year of my BFA (bachelor of fine arts) program at The University of British Columbia.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

HK: I love taking inspiration from the world around me; I love observing color, and the effect it has on people. Most of my work is inspired by plant-life, and fun-bright images celebrating femininity. I also like to incorporate humor into my work from time to time -- you can’t take yourself too seriously.

Q: Do you have a favorite piece of your own work?

HK: One of my favourite pieces to date would have to be my “Stronger Together” illustration that I created for International Women's Day. It was really my first time “giving back” through the use of my artwork, so it was very exciting. For the entire month of March, I pledged to donate 50% of all proceeds from those prints to “Plan International,” an organization working to provide women, and girls with the tools they need to thrive.

Q: Do you have a favorite artist/if so, who is it? Why?

HK: Ooooh, that’s a tough one. There are way too many artists I look up to but some standouts for me are: Tuesday Bassen, Anna Rifle Bond, and Jacqueline Colley.

Q: What role does art play in your life?

HK: I can officially say that I live, and breathe art. It’s an amazing thing that really changes the way I see the world. It allows me to express myself, to open my eyes to inspiration, the be more patient. I really love it.

Q: Have you ever collaborated on a piece with another artist?

HK: I haven’t but I would absolutely love to! I think it’s an amazing thing to swap ideas with other creatives and learn from their processes.

Q: What advice do you have for other artists, women in particular, that want to pursue their artistic passion but are hesitant to do so?

HK: Go for it. For me, especially given my own anxieties, I was really terrified to put myself out there and face the great unknown. But it is so worth it. I truly believe that you are your own worst critic; sometimes you just need to jump feet first and see what happens. You never know if you don’t try.

Q: Tell to us a little bit about your creative process:

HK: My creative process usually begins as soon as I open my eyes in the morning. A cup of coffee, and a whirlwind of mismatched ideas are a good start. Then, I usually turn to my handy-dandy cell phone to sketch out some ideas. Usually I tend to work digitally but I do occasionally dabble with ink or paint.

Q: Explain the pieces you have chosen to showcase, and why:

HK: The pieces I have chosen are: my “Stronger Together” print because, well, girls rule, my

“Rosé Coloured Glasses” print because I think we should all try to see the world through a more positive lens, and lastly, my “Together pho-ever” greeting card design, because my boyfriend's mom makes THE BEST Vietnamese pho (and I really like puns).

Q: Where can people find your art? How can they follow you?

HK: You can follow my daily ramblings on my instagram page @haleykennedystudios. And you can find most of my work to purchase on my Etsy shop under the same name!

P.S!! A big thanks to the Bonded Mag team for allowing me to expand and connect with all you lovely people <3
